Found abundantly throughout the island, particularly in the areas surrounding Can Frare, the Sabina is much more than just a tree. These trees are known for their longevity, often living for hundreds of years. The Sabina’s twisted, gnarled branches and dense wood make it a striking presence in the landscape, standing tall against the elements. This wood has been cherished by the island’s inhabitants for centuries, particularly in the construction of traditional Ibizan homes.
Spanish poet Rafael Alberti captures the essence of the Sabina tree in his evocative verse:
“Sabinas verdes, fuertes sabinas, verdes,
guardadme entre vuestras raíces
cuando todos se vayan.”
Translation:
“Green Sabinas, strong Sabinas, green,
keep me among your roots
when everyone else leaves.”

In fact, the name Juniperus thurifera translates as “incense-producing Juniper.” This is no coincidence—the Sabina wood, when burned, produces a fragrant smoke that has been cherished for centuries in rituals and as natural incense.

Today, Sabina trees are a protected species on the island, safeguarded from being cut down to ensure their continued presence for future generations. However, the forces of nature occasionally take their toll, and after a great storm, some Sabina trees may succumb to the elements. When this happens, we respectfully remove the fallen trees and transport them to the local wood yard. There, skilled artisans carefully clean and prepare the beams, ensuring that even in death, the Sabina continues to contribute to the island’s legacy. These repurposed beams are then used in new building projects, allowing the spirit of the Sabina to live on, connecting the past with the future in a continuous cycle of renewal and respect.
