Whether you are staying at Can Frare for a weekend or a season, the Sabina’s legacy will be a part of your experience, grounding you in the rich, earthy spirit of Ibiza.

The Sabina Tree: Nature’s Gift to Ibiza

The Sabina tree, scientifically known as Juniperus thurifera, is a tree that embodies the rugged beauty and resilience of Ibiza. Found abundantly throughout the island, particularly in the areas surrounding Can Frare, the Sabina is much more than just a tree. It is a symbol of strength, endurance, and the profound connection between the land and its people.

These trees are known for their longevity, often living for hundreds of years. The Sabina’s twisted, gnarled branches and dense wood make it a striking presence in the landscape, standing tall against the elements. But what truly sets the Sabina apart is its wood—dense, durable, and imbued with a rich, earthy aroma that evokes the essence of the Mediterranean. This wood has been cherished by the island’s inhabitants for centuries, particularly in the construction of traditional Ibizan homes.

Spanish poet Rafael Alberti captures the essence of the Sabina tree in his evocative verse:

“Sabinas verdes, fuertes sabinas, verdes,

guardadme entre vuestras raíces

cuando todos se vayan.”

Translation:

“Green Sabinas, strong Sabinas, green,

keep me among your roots

when everyone else leaves.”

In these lines, Alberti reflects on the Sabina tree as a symbol of strength and resilience, a guardian rooted in the earth, even as everything else fades away. This imagery resonates deeply with the role that Sabina plays in the life and legacy of Can Frare.

Building Can Frare: A Story Rooted in the Land

When you step into Can Frare, you are not just entering a beautifully preserved historic home; you are stepping into a living piece of the island’s history. The beams that support the roof, the same beams that have done so for generations, were all sourced from the Sabina trees that grew on the very land Can Frare now occupies. This is no small feat—harvesting and preparing these beams required immense skill, patience, and a deep understanding of the natural environment.

The Fragrance of an Ibizan Finca: How Sabina Shapes Can Frare’s Atmosphere

Using Sabina wood in construction was not merely a matter of convenience. The decision to build with Sabina was rooted in the tree’s unique qualities. Its wood is incredibly resistant to decay, making it ideal for the long-term durability required of structural beams. Additionally, the wood’s natural scent—a musky, earthy aroma—fills the spaces of Can Frare, creating an ambiance that is as calming as it is evocative. Visitors often remark on the scent that greets them upon entering the finca, unaware that it is the Sabina wood, quietly exuding its fragrance throughout the home.

In fact, the name Juniperus thurifera translates as “incense-producing Juniper.” This is no coincidence—the Sabina wood, when burned, produces a fragrant smoke that has been cherished for centuries in rituals and as natural incense.

The Legacy of Sabina at Can Frare

As you explore the finca, you’ll notice Sabina trees still standing proudly around the property, their presence a reminder of the natural beauty that has shaped this historic home. These trees continue to thrive, their roots deep within the same soil that has nurtured generations of the Prats family.

Today, Sabina trees are a protected species on the island, safeguarded from being cut down to ensure their continued presence for future generations. However, the forces of nature occasionally take their toll, and after a great storm, some Sabina trees may succumb to the elements. When this happens, we respectfully remove the fallen trees and transport them to the local wood yard. There, skilled artisans carefully clean and prepare the beams, ensuring that even in death, the Sabina continues to contribute to the island’s legacy. These repurposed beams are then used in new building projects, allowing the spirit of the Sabina to live on, connecting the past with the future in a continuous cycle of renewal and respect.
